SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): During its most recent International Environment Council (IEC) meeting in Valencia, the Bureau of International Relations (BIR) gave a brief overview of a study that was co-funded by BIR and KPMG. The study provides a thorough analysis of the numerous environmental benefits that recycling has brought about globally.
The Steel & Metals Action Plan was recently introduced as a result of pressure from the European steel sector to retain recycled steel domestically. Representatives of the industry denied assertions made by proponents of export controls.

According to IEC Chairman Olivier Francois, Europe produces about 100 million tonnes of recycled steel annually. An estimated 80 million tonnes are consumed in Europe. Twenty million tonnes more are shipped. Furthermore, almost 70% of the shipments were actually lesser grades of recycled steel. Furthermore, Turkish officials have denied allegations that its mills acquire large amounts of recycled steel from Europe since these purchases resulted in government subsidies.
The BIR/KPMG report is based on real market data and realities and incorporates information from a variety of sources. It draws attention to how closely the circular economy and decarbonization are related. Furthermore, compared to its predecessors published in 2008 and 2016, its reach is noticeably broader.
