SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Baytown, Texas will soon be home to an advanced plastic waste recycling facility. The new facility, to be built by ExxonMobil, would be the largest such facility in the entire North American region and is expected to become operational by end-2022.
It must be noted that a smaller, temporary recycling facility is already in operation at the site, which according to the company has successfully recycled over a thousand metric tons of plastic waste. The new facility will further scale up the operations, thereby addressing the plastic waste challenge.
According to the company, it will make use of its proprietary advanced recycling technology in Baytown. The plastic waste will be recycled back into raw materials, which in turn will be used to make new plastic and other valuable products. The company is evaluating wide-scale deployment of the proven technology in other locations across the world, said Karen McKee, President, ExxonMobil Chemical Company. It plans to build around 500,000 metric tons of advanced recycling capacity worldwide over the next five years.
Initially, the facility will have capacity to recycle 30,000 metric tons of plastic waste, which would be expanded quickly.
