Nestle Mexico to Build Flexible Plastic Recycling Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nestle Mexico reached an agreement with UK-based Greenback Recycling Technologies and Enval to build flexible packaging recycling plant in Mexico. This is the company’s first such plant outside of Europe. The plant aims to achieve full circularity of food grade plastic packaging.

The proposed plant will use an innovative microwave-induced pyrolysis technology developed by Enval to transform plastic packaging into pyrolysis oil, which in turn could be used to manufacture new products with post-consumer recycled content. The technology is capable of recycling plastic aluminium laminates by splitting them into high-value oil and aluminium with a low-carbon footprint.

The plant will enable circularity of up to 6,000 tons of flexible plastic packaging in the initial year of operations. Furthermore, Nestle expects sustained growth in both volume as well as installed capacity in coming years.

The collaboration is part of Nestle’s ongoing efforts to reduce its plastic footprint in the environment towards its journey to a waste-free future.

Commenting on the development, Fausto Costa, CEO, Nestle Mexico noted that the project with Greenback and Enval ensures drastic reduction in plastic waste pollution to the betterment of local communities in which it operates.
