Ban on Single-Use Plastics Is Only a First Step, Says Experts

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The proposed ban on a wide range of single-use plastic items will be only a first step in mitigating environmental pollution. The ban is due to take effect from 1st July, 2022.

According to waste management experts, enforcement is the key in making the ban effective. The government needs to implement policies to regulate the use of alternative materials, improve recycling and ensure enhanced waste management systems. The systems in the ground need to be strengthened in order to ensure strict implementation of the notification guidelines across the country, they said.

They alleged that there are no clear guidelines in place with regards to alternatives to plastics. This could create problems when the plastic ban comes into force. The government should come up with clear rules to promote alternative options. Also, new rules lack clear guidelines on recycling. In short, the ban alone will not be sufficient. It must be supported by strict regulations and industry initiatives.

As per estimates, only around 60% of plastic waste in India is collected for recycling, whereas the remaining 40% continues to remain uncollected. The country needs to improve the amount of plastic collected and recycled.
