City Council Goes Ahead with Plastic Bag Tax

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The City of Alexandria considers implementing tax on plastic bags. The City Council will consider the proposal to charge five-cent bag fees on all disposable bags offered at grocery, convenience and drug stores at its legislative meeting scheduled to be held on September 14^th. A public hearing session is scheduled to be held on September 18^th, during which the Council will cast a final vote.

Upon passing of the ordinance, five-cents ($0.05) tax would be imposed for each disposable plastic bag provided, whether or not provided free of charge, to a consumer of tangible personal property by regulated retailers. The retailers will be permitted to keep a portion of the tax collected. The entities will be allowed to retain two cents for every five cents collected from when the tax goes into effect in the City through January 1, 2023, after which it will reduce to one cent.

The City will host a virtual information session on September 8, 2021 at 7 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The session will cover an overview of the tax proposal, in addition to providing an opportunity for stakeholders to raise questions or comments regarding the same.

The plastic bag tax aims to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags, which are found to lead to serious environmental threats.
