The project involved complete renovation of the flash smelter.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): As part of the largest modernization project in almost thirty years, Aurubis declared that it had successfully finished the planned maintenance shutdown at its Bulgarian plant. As a result, it said, all site facilities have fully resumed operations.
Over the course of about two months, more than 120 coordinated projects were completed on time and within budget. In an attempt to ensure the plant's excellent operating performance, the business has committed close to €115 million in these improvements. The planning for the shutdown had begun in 2023. Around 2,000 people, in addition to the Aurubis Bulgaria team, were involved in the project.
The flash smelter has to be completely renovated as part of the project. The refurbishment included the replacement of 15 km of copper pipes, cooling units, and 300 tons of steel walls. Additionally, it used cutting-edge components to improve the smelting process. To enhance environmental performance, two electrostatic precipitators were replaced as part of the project. The manufacture of sulfuric acid also underwent significant upgrading.
The successful project completion shows Aurubis' ability to carry out complicated projects securely and dependably, according to Tim Kurth, COO Custom Smelting and Products and Executive Director Aurubis Bulgaria.
