At Least Two Killed in Gold Mine Attack in Burkina Faso

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The onslaught by attackers at the Karma industrial gold mine in northern Burkina Faso has killed a soldier as well as a mine employee. Around four soldiers were injured during the incident. The mine is owned by Nere Mining Group, the Burkina Faso-based consortium.

The deadly attack took place during the early hours of Thursday morning. As per latest reports, the mine operations remain suspended. The impacts of the attack on the mine are still under evaluation. The company, in a press release, noted that the assailants have not been identified yet and that the attack was successfully repelled by mine security personnel and soldiers.

Meantime, there are reports which suggest that at least three people have been killed in the attacks and ten others injured, eight of them seriously. Around 200 unknown attackers rushed to the mine attacking people and property. Several burnt-out vehicles could be seen inside the mine complex.

The attacks by Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State have become a routine affair in Burkina Faso. There have been several reports of attacks on buses carrying mine workers. However, attacks on mines have not been much heard about.

Nere Mining had purchased 90% stake in the Karma mine from Endeavour Mining this march. The mine had recorded production of 88,000 ounces of gold during the previous year.
