SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The clashes between artisanal gold miners at an informal mining site in Chad has led to death of around 100 people, said the country’s Defense Minister Daoud Yaya Brahim.
According to the company press release, the deadly violence occurred at a mining site in Kouri Bougoudi district, adjacent to Libyan border on 23rd and 24th May. The government envoy had visited the site of violence to assess the situation and calm things down. The mission had then stated that several people were injured and some had lost their lives, without confirming the number of deaths.

The mining activities at the site remains suspended and workers are being evacuated, said the Minister. He alleged that the fighting is fuelled by terrorists from Libya. Although the suspension of mining activities has affected local miners and those from other countries, the action has helped to restore calm in the area. The situation is well under control, the Minister said. Around 20 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
According to reports, the area near the border to Libya has many illegally operated gold mines.
The Chad government has advised to avoid the impacted area until the situation stabilizes. It has also been advised to avoid large gatherings and travel at night.
