ASI Certifies Ardagh Metal Packaging’s Aluminum Plants

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced last week the certification of Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) under ASI’s Performance Standard (V2) 2017 at both its regional headquarters in Germany and its aluminium production plant in France.

ASI certified AMP’s regional headquarters in Bonn’s centralized operational functions, global support functions, and quality assurance, while the certification at La Ciotat, France, covers the manufacturing of aluminium beverage can bodies.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, said in a press release that AMP’s certification was no mean feat.

“ASI congratulates Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) on achieving Performance Standard Certification for its centralized functions in Germany and production facility in France. Closing the loop for a company’s products requires engagement with a range of stakeholders. AMP connects with federal, state, and local government to encourage policy solutions that help to increase collection and the effectiveness of recycling systems, and it also engages with its customers to increase access to collection points and provide education on the benefits of recycling. Higher recycling rates are achieved not by chance, but by design, and AMP’s ASI Performance Standard Certification demonstrates the company’s commitment to the material stewardship of its aluminium products.”

ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The standard defines 59 criteria categorized in three sustainability pillars that cover several issues, including biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. Third-party audit of the certification was conducted by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.

Jennifer Cumbee, Chief Sustainability Officer, AMP, said last week’s certification was but one step on the firm’s journey towards sustainability.
