AngloGold to Suspend Production from South Africa Gold Mines

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): AngloGold Ashanti announced that it will temporarily suspend production from its South African mines for a period of three weeks effective 26th March, 2020.

This is in response to the three-week lockdown period declared by the country to curb the spread of COVID-19. The mines owned and operated by AngloGold Ashanti will be placed on care and maintenance over this period. The company will develop plans to help safely regain production, wherever possible.

AngloGold’s South African operations comprises of the Mponeng Mine, Mine Waste Solutions and surface rock-dump processing operations. The combined output from the above mines had totalled 419,000 ounces in 2019.

Last week, the company had announced suspension of mining activities at Cerro Vanguardia mine in Argentina until the end of March 2020, given the recent countrywide restrictions on travels and border closings.

Meantime, the company noted that it continues to remain in a state of high-alert to counter the challenges presented by the COVID-19 outbreak. The company has taken a range of measures, including setting up of a multidisciplinary taskforce, in order to ensure safety of employees, their families and the host communities.
