SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Ukraine has urged the European Union (EU) to impose a full ban on supplies of alumina and aluminum ores to Russia. The move is part of the country’s broader efforts to tighten economic pressure on Moscow.
The appeal was made by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland. He said additional sanctions are needed to prevent Russia from adjusting to existing restrictions and maintaining its military capabilities.
The proposal is particularly significant for Ireland because the country hosts the Aughinish alumina refinery in County Limerick. The facility, owned by Russian aluminum producer Rusal, is among the largest alumina plants in Europe.

According to an investigation cited by Ukrainian officials, Aughinish shipped more than 422,000 tonnes of alumina to Russia during the first half of 2026, with the shipments valued at about €119.5 million.
Ukraine argues that alumina is an important input for Russia's aluminum industry and defense manufacturing, including aerospace and military equipment.
