SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Registration is now open for the 21st edition of steelChallenge, an international competition that tests participants’ steelmaking skills using digital simulation tools. Organized by steeluniversity, the education and training arm of the World Steel Association, steelChallenge-21 will hold its Regional Championship on November 17, 2026, starting at 12:00 UTC.
Competitors will use steeluniversity’s steelmaking simulators to produce a specified grade of steel while meeting technical and carbon-emission targets. The participants will have to achieve the required quality at the lowest possible production cost per tonne.

Participants will have 24 hours to complete successful simulation runs. The championship will be held across five geographic divisions: Americas; Europe & Africa; Asia–West; Asia–North; and Asia–East & Oceania.
The competition will feature three categories this year: Industry, University Student and High School Student.
For the first time, high school students from around the world can enter the competition. The category follows a successful trial in steelChallenge-20. It is aimed at introducing younger participants to modern steel production, sustainability and technology-driven decision-making.
Registered participants will have access to steeluniversity’s Learning Solutions Directory, featuring online courses, live masterclasses, 3D learning models and steelmaking simulation exercises.
The Regional Championship is scheduled for November 17, 2026, beginning at 12:00 UTC. The competition will be conducted across five geographic divisions: Americas; Europe & Africa; Asia–West; Asia–North; and Asia–East & Oceania.
Competitors will use steelmaking simulators to produce a specified grade of steel while satisfying technical quality and carbon-emission requirements. They will also be expected to minimize production costs per tonne, with up to 24 hours available to complete successful simulation runs.
The competition has three categories: Industry, University Student and High School Student. For the first time, high school students from around the world are eligible to participate, giving younger competitors an opportunity to learn about steel production, sustainability and technology-driven decision-making.
