SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Glencore has announced the acquisition of a 45% stake in an aluminium recycling and remelting facility located near Charleston, strengthening its footprint in the U.S. secondary metals sector. The remaining 55% stake will be held and operated by Alumicore, which brings established expertise in aluminium processing and plant operations.

The investment builds on Glencore’s earlier financial backing of the project, which had secured the company marketing rights for the facility’s output. The move underscores Glencore’s broader strategy to support a resilient and sustainable domestic aluminium supply chain in the United States, where it already holds a 30% stake in Century Aluminum.
Alumicore currently operates a similar recycling facility in Monessen, Pennsylvania, and is developing another advanced processing and melting plant in Pittsburgh. Combined, these facilities are expected to deliver a recycling capacity exceeding 120,000 tonnes of aluminium annually.
The partnership aims to accelerate the South Carolina plant’s development, drive long-term growth, and enhance supply reliability while contributing to regional economic development and sustainability goals.
