Alcoa Unveiled New Low-Carbon, Smelter-Grade Alumina Brand

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-headquartered Alcoa Corporation announced major expansion to its Sustana line of products. The company unveiled its new product named EcoSource, which it claims to be the industry’s first low-carbon, smelter-grade alumina brand.

According to the company press release, Ecosource is manufactured with no more than six-tenths of carbon-dioxide equivalents per ton of alumina, which is almost double the industry average of 1.2 tons. The measurement comprises of direct emissions from its bauxite mining and alumina refining processes and indirect emissions from the energy consumed in those processes. The carbon emissions profile of refineries that produce Ecosource alumina are better than 90% of the other alumina refineries in the world.

Roy Harvey, President and CEO, Alcoa noted that the new range of products will help the company to boost its efforts to improve environmental footprint. The low emission levels reported by the process demonstrate its leadership in sustainability, he added.

The company’s Sustana line of products also include EcoLum low-carbon aluminum produced with less than 4.0 metric tons of carbon-dioxide equivalents per ton and EcoDura aluminum made from 50% recycled content.
