Alcoa Extended Consultation Period at San Ciprian Aluminum Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa, Inc. announced that it has reached an agreement with workers’ representatives of the San Ciprian aluminum plant in Spain on extending the deadline of formal consultation period for collective dismissal to 28th September, 2020. The agreement also allows the company to pursue potential sale of the plant to GFG Alliance. The new agreement has already been endorsed by the national and regional governments.

According to company press release, the aluminum facility will continue to operate during the evaluation process. The potential sale would cover the smelter as well as the casthouse. Meantime, the alumina refinery at the San Ciprian site is excluded from the consultation or sale process.

In accordance with the agreement, the company management and workers’ representatives would meet on the last day of the extended deadline, in case it fails to reach a sales agreement on or before 27th September. This meeting would discuss a social plan covering unemployment benefits and a clear roadmap towards implementation of the permanent collective dismissal.

The last meeting for collective dismissal on 4th August had failed to reach an agreement. The company had 15 days to announce a final decision.
