The year-to-date total and finished steel imports were down 6.2% and 8.4% respectively upon comparison with 2024.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the most recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2.481 million net tons of steel were imported in May of this year. This is a significant 19.6% increase over the prior month. Additionally, imports of finished steel increased by 10.4% from April 2025 to 1.778 million net tons during the month.

With import volumes up 70% from April of this year, plates in coils were the finished steel product with the biggest rise in import quantities. Furthermore, imports of sheets, strips, and other metallic coatings increased 66% month over month. Throughout the month, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, and Taiwan were the leading offshore suppliers.

The 12-month period from June 2024 to May 2025 saw a 3.7% decline in total steel imports and a 2.5% reduction in finished steel imports year over year.
According to the AISI data, imported finished steel accounted for 20% of the market in May of this year.
During the 12-month period from June 2024 to May 2025, imports of line pipes and tin plates surged dramatically in comparison to the previous 12-month period. Imports of these goods increased by 79% and 11%, respectively.
