It must be noted that the Institute had previously submitted its comments to EPA, highlighting its concerns over the proposed rule.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has welcomed the announcement by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Lee Zeldin that the agency proposes to revise the rule regarding greenhouse gas (GHG) limits on power plants.

Commenting on the matter, Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of AISI noted that the GHG emissions from U.S. power plants are not a major contributor to the global problem. The emissions from the U.S. power plants have recorded significant reduction from 2005 onwards and are likely to see further decline in the foreseeable future.

The onerous and costly mandate included in the current power plant rule is feared to adversely impact the innovations that are already being implemented to reduce America’s carbon footprint. AISI applauded EPA for announcing the new approach, saying that heavy-handed federal requirements on the power sector will have negative implications not only on the industry, but grid reliability in general.

It must be noted that the Institute had previously submitted its comments to EPA, highlighting its concerns over the proposed rule. It had requested EPA to refrain from finalizing the rules, until the concerns are addressed.
