AF&PA Published Updated Voluntary Standard for Recycling Cardboard

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), Washington, and the Itasca, Lillinois-based Fibre Box Association (FBA) have updated their “Voluntary Standards for Repulping and Recycling Coated or Treated Corrugated Fiberboard and its Equivalents in the Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) Recycling Stream”.

The Voluntary Standard is a set of industry-supported guidelines for determining whether goods like coated or treated cardboard packaging can be recycled and disposed of. In order to satisfy consumer demands, it is expected to assist the industry in creating novel coatings and treatments for cardboard packaging. Furthermore, it will guarantee that they are recyclable and repulpable.

A combined committee of AF&PA and FBA members created the most recent revision to the Voluntary Standard, which aims to remove as much paper-based material as possible from the waste stream while taking into account modern mill technology and production techniques.

"The repulpability and recyclability test procedures in the revised Voluntary Standard yield results that are valid, reliable, and repeatable," said Bob McIlvaine, President and CEO of the Fibre Box Association.
