World Steel Trade Body Published Ferrous Scrap Trade Details for 2021

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) published the ‘World Steel in Figures 2022’ report, which summarizes world ferrous scrap trade by area during the previous year. The trade totalled 109.8 million tonnes during the year.

The total imports by the European Union (27) countries stood at 34 million tonnes. Out of this, 28.6 million tonnes were imported from within the region. Also, the imports from Other Europe region totalled 3.3 million tonnes. The extra-regional imports by the EU-27 countries totalled 5.5 million tonnes.

The second largest importer of ferrous scrap was Other Asia, whose imports amounted to 32.1 million tonnes. USMCA was the main supplier of ferrous scrap to the region, followed by Japan. Meantime, Other Europe region imported 25.6 million tonnes of scrap during the previous year.

The largest exporter of ferrous scrap was the EU-27 countries. The exports from the region totalled 47.9 million tonnes. The second and third largest exporters were the USMCA and Other Europe with supplies of 23.3 million tonnes and 10.9 million tonnes respectively, the worldsteel data suggested.

The USMCA emerged as the largest net exporter of ferrous scrap, whereas Other Asia was the largest net importer.
