World Scrap Trade Witnessed Mixed Trend in First Quarter 2021

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest statistics published by the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) indicates that the country’s scrap exports totalled around 1.61 million tons in the month of March this year. This is higher by 18.8% from the previous month and by 14.4% from the same month a year before. The value of exports totalled approximately $663 million during the month.

The largest export destination of U.S. scrap was Turkey, which saw imports of 462,000 tons of scrap from the U.S. The exports to Turkey surged higher by 62.5% over the previous month. The other key export destinations were Mexico (331,000 tons), Taiwan (152,000 tons), Malaysia (115,000 tons) and Vietnam (89,000 tons).

The Japan Customs data suggests that the country’s scrap exports totalled around 1.9 million tons in the initial quarter of the current year. This is down by 22% from the corresponding quarter in 2020. The largest export destination was Vietnam with 659,000 tons of import from Japan. In second and third place were South Korea (624,900 tons) and Taiwan (220,900 tons).

Meantime, the Turkish scrap imports surged by one-fifth to total 6.32 million tons in the first quarter of this year, said the data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The top three sources of import were the Netherlands (1.03 million tons), the UK (735,200 tons) and the U.S. (693,000 tons).
