WestRock Alliance to Eliminate Over 100 Tonnes of Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Grupo Modelo- the leading American beer brewing company has announced its decision to partner with WestRock and Grupo Mondi in a move that could eliminate over 100 tons of plastic waste.

The company will invest approximately 4 million USD to adopt the WestRock CanCollar Eco technology in sustainable packaging. The innovative packaging will eliminate plastic rings on cans sold in Quintana Roo. The move will help to avoid 335 tons of packaging waste per year, said the company press release. Grupo Modelo is the first company in the Americas to adopt the innovative technology, which will help in replacing hard-to-recycle plastic packaging, thus delivering significant sustainability benefits.

The project will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, rings in the 6-pack 355ml Corona Extra, Montejo and Modelo Especial cans will be replaced. In the second phase, it plans to install specialized high speed machine, which will eliminate the use of plastic rings across Mexico on 6-pack 355 ml cans and the 4-pack 473 ml cans.

The innovative packaging solution made from recyclable paperboard uses the least amount of material required to hold and keep its beer cans secure through the supply chain, said Soqui Calderon, regional director of Sustainability for Grupo Modelo.
