voestalpine to Build Advanced Special Steel Plant in Austria

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): voestalpine AG will construct the most advanced special steel plant in the world in Kapfenberg, Austria. The plant is considered as the first new specialized steel plant to be built in Europe over the past 40 years. According to company sources, construction works are expected to commence tomorrow.

The plant is expected to become operational by 2021 and will have a production capacity of nearly 205,000 tons of high performance steel per year. In addition, the facility will also produce materials for 3D printing of complex metal parts. The new factory will be highly digitized and almost completely automated. The site staff will be provided necessary training in use of robotics, sensor technology and data analysis techniques.

The company’s High Performance Metals Division plans to invest around €350m to build the plant. The construction is estimated to run into almost three years from the date of groundbreaking. The construction phase of the hi-tech steel plant is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs in the region. Moreover, it will secure around 3,000 existing jobs. The new facility will replace the existing Bohler special steel plant at the site, voestalpine AG noted.

The Kapfenberg steel plant will manufacture high-performance steel products, mainly for aerospace, automotive, oil and gas industries.

The new plant houses several advanced features that contribute immensely to environmental and energy efficiency. The electric arc furnace, which is used to melt down scrap and alloys into liquid materials, operates using electricity that is generated from 100% renewable sources. The new facility’s closed cooling water circuits expect to cut consumption of water for cooling by as much as 90%.

The construction of the plant signals revival of the European steel industry, which has been in a long-term decline.

The voestalpine Group is a market leader with total revenue of EUR 11.3 billion in 2016/17. It has nearly 50,000 employees worldwide.
