USW’s Tentative Agreement with Arconic Face Anger From Workers

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Aluminum workers have expressed anger over the last-minute deal reached between the United Steelworkers (USW) union and Arconic. The four-year deal covers 3,400 workers at Arconic facilities.

The proposed deal recommends a 7% raise in wages in the first year and 4.5% increase in the next three years. The deal also eliminates the previously agreed performance-based pay scheme. In anticipation of mass opposition from workers, USW and management have agreed to pay $2,000 signing bonus and $2,000 in January next year. Considering the current inflation rate of 8.3%, the deal would result in real cut in wages, workers noted.

Commenting on the deal, USW bargaining committee, which unanimously backed the deal, claimed that it has reached a fair deal. The officials belonging to the USW Local Department 105 in Davenport noted that the hourly wage increase proposed in the deal is to make up for the pay-for-performance plan that stands cancelled now.

The Arconic management welcomed the deal, saying that it accomplishes the company’s goal of rewarding its employees for their commitment as essential workers, while enabling the sustainable growth of its business.

The tentative contract will be put to vote on a later date. Meantime, workers at Davenport facility along with other locals authorized a strike action, just before the announcement of the deal.
