U.S. Raw Steel Output Posted Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 12.0% during the week ending on December 18, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.805 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 81.8%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.612 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 72.9% during the corresponding week a year before. Meantime, the weekly crude steel production recorded marginal decline by 0.7% over the week. The production was 1.818 million NT during the week ended December 11, 2021.

The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 91.704 million NT through the week ending on December 18, 2021. This is up by 19.3% from the production which totalled 76.893 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable surge from 68.1% to 81.6% over the year.

The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 745,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 619,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-166, Midwest-201 and Western-74.
