U.S. Steel Invests $1B in Cutting-Edge Technology at Mon Valley Works

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): United States Steel Corporation has announced investment of over $1 billion towards installing state-of-the-art steel making technology at its Mon Valley Works. The proposed investment will see construction of new endless casting and rolling facility at its Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Pa. and a cogeneration facility at its Clairton, Pa plant. This will make Mon Valley Works the first facility in the entire U.S. that combines thin slab casting and hot rolled band production into one continuous process.

The new endless casting and rolling facility replaces the existing traditional slab caster and hot strip mill facilities at the Mon Valley Works. In addition, the proposed new cogeneration facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art emission control systems, which will convert a portion of the generated coke oven gas into electricity, which in turn will power steel making and finishing facilities throughout U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley operations.

U.S. Steel foresees significant improvements in emissions upon completion of the investment, in demonstration of its ongoing commitment towards resources conservation and air quality improvement.
