U.S. Steel Celebrated Opening of Minnesota Pellet Production Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based integrated steelmaker United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) celebrated the opening of its direct reduced (DR)-grade pellet production facility at Keetac plant, Minnesota.

The plant has already confirmed the first shipment of DR-grade pellets. The plant, built at an investment of $150 million, is expected to deliver approximately four million tons of pellets every year. The plant has been launched with the aim of boosting supplies to the highly tight DR-grade pellet market with low-cost iron ore.

The construction of the new facility had commenced in August 2022 and was completed in December last year. The new facility has the option to produce either DR-grade iron ore pellets or blast furnace iron ore pellets.

The celebration to mark the event was attended among others by U. S. Steel President and CEO David B. Burritt, Senior Vice President - Raw Materials and Sustainable Resources John Gordon, apart from company employees and community members.

Commenting on the development, Burritt noted that the project was completed well ahead of time, under budget and most importantly, safely. The facility has created around 250 construction jobs in addition to 33 full-time jobs. It is an incredible achievement for the company and its team at Keetac, he added.
