U.S. Steel Capacity Utilization Inched Lower

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The raw steel production tonnage report published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) for the week ended December 7, 2019 suggests marginal decline in raw steel output and mill capacity utilization rate, compared with the same period in the previous year. Also, the output and mill utilization rate recorded decline over the prior week.

According to AISI weekly data, the U.S. raw steel production totalled 1.821 million net tons during the week ending on December 7, 2019. The capability utilization rate during the week was 78.7%. The production in the week ended December 7, 2018 was 1.861 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 79.4%. The mill capability utilization rate reported marginal decline over the previous year. The U.S. domestic mills reported lower capability utilization level of 80.5% during the week ended November 9, 2019. Also, the raw steel production was down by 2.1% year-on-year.

The production inched downward marginally by 0.8% from the prior week. AISI noted that production during the week ended November 30, 2019 had totalled 1.835 million net tons. The capability utilization rate was 79.3% during the previous week.

Meantime, the year-to-date production until December 7, 2019, at 90.470 million net tons, was up by 1.9% from the production of 89.055 million net tons during the corresponding period last year. The capability utilization rate too jumped higher from 78.2% to 80.1%.

U.S. Southern region emerged as the leading producer with an output of 666,000 net tons, followed by Great Lakes with 653,000 net tons. The output by other regions was as follows: North East (225,000 net tons), Midwest (193,000 net tons) and Western (84,000 net tons).
