AISI: Steel Shipments Surged 2% in October

AISI: Steel Shipments Surged 2% in October

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The steel shipments by the U.S. mills during October this year surged higher from the prior month. However, the shipments declined marginally when compared with the same month a year before. This is with reference to the latest trade statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The Institute had recently reported substantial decline in steel import permits in November this year.

The steel shipments by the U.S. mills totalled 7.914 million net tons during the month of October this year. This is slightly higher by 1.9% from the prior month. The shipments had totalled 7.767 million net tons during September 2019. When compared with the same month a year before, the shipments recorded marginal decline by 3.2%. It must be noted that the U.S. steel mills had shipped 8.175 million net tons of steel in October 2018.

The AISI report also provides comparison of October 2019 shipments with the prior month. Upon comparison with September this year, the shipments of hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip recorded notable surge by 3%. The other product to witness notable increase in shipment volume was cold rolled sheets, whose volumes were up by 2%. Meantime, shipment volume of hot rolled sheets witnessed no change from the prior month.

According to AISI data, the year-to-date steel shipments totalled 80.492 million net tons in 2019. This is marginally higher by 1.1% when matched with the corresponding period in 2018. The shipments had totalled 79.643 million net tons during the initial nine months of the previous year.
