U.S. Raw Steel Output Recorded Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 15.7% during the week ending on April 3, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.766 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 77.9%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.526 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 66.7% during the corresponding week in 2020. Meantime, the weekly crude steel production increased marginally by 0.3% over the week. The production was 1.760 million NT during the week ended March 27, 2021.

The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 23.172 million NT through the week ending on April 3, 2021. This is down by 4.2% from the production which totalled 24.185 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump from 79% to 77% over the year.

The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 742,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 610,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-159, Midwest-184 and Western-71.
