U.S. Plastics Pact Explores New Strategies to Reduce Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Plastics Pact- the collaborative effort organized by The Recycling Partnership and the World Wildlife Fund announced that it will pursue innovative strategies to eliminate unnecessary packaging, boost recyclability and promote use of recycled content in packaging.

The pact brings together companies, government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), researchers and other stakeholders to drive collaborative action to deliver change in system toward a circular economy for plastic. This is based on the realization that a systemwide change is needed to ensure a circular economy for plastic and that individualized actions will not be sufficient.

More than 60 companies have already joined the U.S. Plastics Pact. By joining so, they have committed to define a list of packaging to be designated as problematic or unnecessary by 2021 and take necessary actions to eliminate them by 2025. The 2025 goal also targets that all plastic packaging must be 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable. In addition, all plastic packaging must have minimum 30% average recycled content.

The efforts by the U.S. Plastic Pact is expected to deliver significant advances to packaging, boost recycling and reduce plastic waste, thereby benefiting the entire system chain.
