U.S. PET Recycling Rate Touched 29.2% in 2017

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest report published jointly by the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) and the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) indicates marginal increase in U.S. polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling rate during the previous year, when compared with 2016.

The ‘Report on Postconsumer PET Recycling Activity in 2017’ suggests marginal increase in the country’s PET recycling rate to 29.2%, as compared with 28.4% in 2016. The report cites notable decline in total PET bottle collection volumes and volume of bottles made available for recycling in the U.S.

According to Tom Busard, Chairman, NAPCOR, domestic demand for RPET continued to remain strong. However, more efforts need to be done to boost the quality and volume of PETs that go to country’s reclaimers, he noted.

The recycled PET material purchased by reclaimers and export market totaled 1,726 million pounds in 2017. The purchases of rPET by domestic reclaimers for further processing totaled 1,442 million pounds, whereas the balance 284 million pounds were sold to export markets including Canada. The exports accounted for just over 16% of total collection. The share of exports dropped to the lowest level since 2004.

The combined rPET usage by the U.S. and Canadian end market applications totaled 1.57 million pounds in 2017, significantly higher by over 5% when matched with 2016. However, the rPET use in bottles registered marginal decline in 2017.
