U.S. Exports of Aluminum Scrap Posted Notable Decline

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The most recent trade statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that exports of aluminum scrap registered notable decline during the initial six-month period of the current year. The exports were valued at $957.35 million during this period, significantly lower by 18.25% when matched with $1.17 billion during the corresponding six-month period in 2019.

The primary importer of aluminum scrap from the U.S. was South Korea. The value of exports to that country totalled $174.42 million, accounting for nearly 18% of the total U.S. shipments. Meantime, the South Korean imports from the U.S. recorded notable surge by nearly 11%, compared with the previous year. In second place was Malaysia, with imports valued at $161.91 million. The imports by Malaysia surged higher significantly by approximately 42% year-on-year. India emerged as the third largest importer, receiving $146.91 million worth of aluminum scrap from the U.S. The other key export market destinations were China ($116.38 million) and Mexico ($53.35 million).

The U.S. imported $300.67 million worth of aluminum scrap during the first half of the current year. This compares with $425.79 million during the year-ago period, thereby translating into a year-on-year decline of nearly 29%. The top sources of import were Canada ($189.15 million), Mexico ($87.81 million) and Brazil ($4.92 million).
