SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Unifi- the Greensboro, North Carolina-based manufacturer of recycled and synthetic fibres announced that it has reached a significant sustainability milestone by transforming more than 30 billion post consumer bottles into polyester chips that are used in Repreve fiber and resin.
The milestone was reached ahead of schedule. It must be noted that Unifi had reached 10 billion bottles milestone by 2017 and 20 billion bottles milestone by end-2020. The company had set a target of 30 billion bottles by end-2022.
Commenting on the achievement, Eddie Ingle, Chief Executive, Unifi thanked consumers for choosing to buy products made with Repreve. The milestone means that it has saved enough energy to power nearly 284,000 homes in the U.S for a period of one year, in comparison with using virgin fibres.
