UN E-Waste Monitor 2020: Global Electronic Waste Surged Alarmingly

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The UN Global E-Waste Monitor 2020 report says that global electronic waste surged higher by 21% over the past five years. The worldwide e-waste generation totalled 53.6 million metric tons (Mt) in 2019. Furthermore, the report predicts that global e-waste is likely to reach 74 Mt by 2030.

According to the report, Asia generated the highest volume of e-waste during the previous year. The region generated 24.9 Mt, accounting for almost 47% of the global e-waste. The report noted that approximately 98 Mt of carbon-dioxide equivalents were released by discarded large appliances such as fridges and air conditioners.

The worldwide per capita e-waste generation stood at 7.3 kilograms. Europe ranked first as per this classification with per capita e-waste generation of 16.2 kilograms, closely followed by Oceania with 16.1 kilograms. The figures for Asia and Africa were much lower at 5.6 kilograms and 2.5 kilograms respectively.

Small equipment accounted for 17.4 Mt of the e-waste, whereas large equipment comprised of 132.1 Mt.

Also, only 17.4% of the e-waste was collected and recycled in 2019. This essentially means that materials valued at around $57 million escaped collection and ended up being dumped or burned.
