SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent data from the National Packaging Waste Database (NPWD) states that 145,000 tonnes of aluminum packaging were collected for recycling in the UK during the previous year. The collection exceeded the target by almost 26%. Also, it surged higher from the prior year by nearly 24%.
The aluminum packaging collected through kerbside and collection points increased over the year. The tonnage of the material recovered from incinerator bottom ash also witnessed notable surge. The coronavirus crisis and lockdowns emerged as the major drivers for the increased collection rates, said industry experts. The increased public awareness about the need for sustainable aluminum recycling also contributed to the highest recycling rate during the year.

According to Rick Hindley, executive director, the Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (Alupro), the MetalMatters and Every Can Counts programs continued to run even in the midst of extremely challenging market situation on account of the pandemic. Both the above programs have been instrumental in sustaining household recycling rates throughout the year, it added.
The industry body foresees even higher aluminum packaging recycling rates in the first quarter of 2021, mainly driven by ongoing impacts of Covid-19.
