UK Aluminum Beverage Can Recycling Topped 82% in 2020

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent data published by the UK Environment Agency (EA) says that aluminium beverage can recycling hit the highest ever rate in 2020. The recycling rate topped 82%, registering 6% growth over the prior year.

The household consumption spiralled due to Covid-19 pandemic, thus resulting in more collection and recycling of aluminum beverage cans. The number of separately collected aluminium packaging rose from 89,543 in 2019 to 106,047 tonnes in 2020. Meantime, the volume recovered from incinerator bottom ash too was up significantly from 26,265 in 2019 to 45,468 in the previous year. Also, nearly 86% of the collected aluminum packaging was recycled domestically within Europe.

Aluminum has reported the highest year-over-year increase in recycling rates, when compared to other packaging materials. It exceeded the 2020 business targets by approximately 15%.

Commenting on the milestone achievement, Rick Hindley, executive director at Alupro noted that the notable increase in the volume of separately collected aluminium packaging recovered at the kerbside is a clear indication of changing consumer behaviours and better awareness of the benefits of recycling.

The provisional data for the initial quarter of 2021 suggests that aluminum packaging collection rates have maintained its uptrend.
