UAE Joined High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced that it has joined the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) to End Plastic Pollution, which targets to eliminate plastic pollution by 2040. The announcement came during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Accordingly, Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment attended the first in-person meeting of the HAC for Nature and People International Steering Committee, which seeks to designate 30% of Earth’s land and ocean area as protected areas by 2030.

Almheiri noted that the UAE is proud to be a member of the HAC to End Plastic Pollution. The objective of the coalition aligns with the country’s commitment to combat pollution on all fronts and reduce its negative impacts on the environment. A shift towards a more circular plastics economy and adoption of environment-friendly waste management solutions will help in effectively addressing plastic pollution, she noted. The UAE is dedicated to support the coalition’s efforts, she added.

Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the UAE, had imposed a ban on single-use plastic bags in the month of June this year, thus becoming the first place in the Middle East to do so.
