SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to recent statistics published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the country’s scrap imports surged higher during the month of March this year, when compared with the year before.
The country imported around 2.35 million tons of scrap during the month. This is higher by 13% from the same month a year before and significantly higher by 90.6% over the prior month. The largest source of import was the U.S., which accounted for nearly 432,400 tons of imports. The imports from the U.S. recorded notable decline by 15.5% year-on-year, said the TUIK data.
The second largest source of import was the UK, which supplied 308,600 tons of scrap during the month, surging higher by 298.4% over the previous year. Meantime, Belgium ranked third with supplies totalling 294,700 tons. The imports from that country were up by 36%, compared with the previous year.
During the initial quarter of the current year, Turkey imported approximately 4.9 million tons of scrap. This is down by 24% when compared with the imports during the corresponding quarter a year before. The largest import source was the U.S., with 959,000 tons, followed by the Netherlands and Belgium.
