Trade Stats Point to Decline in U.S. Copper Scrap Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The exports of copper waste and scrap by the U.S. registered sharp decline during the first eight months of the current year, says latest trade data published by the U.S. Census Bureau. The country exported $1.66 billion worth of scrap copper during this period, down by 14.41% when compared with the exports of $1.94 billion during Jan-Aug ‘19. The monthly exports totalled $226.73 million in August 2020.

The primary export destination of copper waste and scrap from the U.S. was China. China accounted for exports valued at $320.24 million, representing approximately one-fifth of all shipments by the U.S. in Jan-Aug ‘20. The second largest importer was Canada, whose imports from the U.S. were valued at $199.69 million. With 11.43% market share, South Korea emerged as the third largest destination of U.S exports.

Meantime, the data through August this year suggests approximately 35% decline in U.S. imports of copper waste and scrap. The country imported $292.80 million worth of material, as compared with the imports of $447.52 million in the corresponding eight-month period last year.

The top five sources of import were Canada ($167.03 million), Mexico ($100.69 million), Dominican Republic ($4.24 million), Peru ($3.14 million) and Costa Rica ($2.89 million). Approximately 95% of all copper scrap imports to the U.S. were from the above five countries. The combined imports from these countries totalled $277.99 million.
