Tolko Declares Joint Venture Sawmill Project in Louisiana

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tolko Industries, in alliance with Hunt Forest Products will build a new sawmill in Bienville Parish, near Taylor, Louisiana.

The state-of-the-art sawmill will be built at an investment of around $240 million. The construction works are expected to begin by early next year, with an anticipated H1 2023 startup. Upon reaching full capacity, the sawmill will employ approximately 130 people. The two companies will own 50% share each. The mill will be managed and operated by Hunt on a day-to-day basis. It must be noted that Tolko and Hunt Forest Products had joined hands to build a modern sawmill in Urania, which began operations in 2018.

The location of the facility includes nearly 255 acres of land comprising the existing Taylor sawmill site and some nearby timberland. The facility will mainly use local timber feedstock to produce around 320 million board feet of lumber every year. The wood requirement of the mill is projected at around 1.3 million tons. It will provide a local outlet for the massive inventory of southern yellow pine in the state of Louisiana, said James D. Hunt, co-owner of Hunt Forest Products.

Apart from bringing new generation sawmill technology to Louisiana, the sawmill is expected to provide big boost to the local economy.
