SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading steelmaker Tata Steel announced that it has commissioned a new carbon-capture plant at its Jamshedpur Steelworks. The plant has a carbon-capture capacity of 5 tonne per day. It extracts carbon-dioxide gas from blast furnace gas. Tata Steel has emerged as the first steel company in the country to adopt the latest technology. The captured carbon dioxide will be reused at the site, so as to promote circular carbon economy.

The carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) plant, inaugurated by T V Narendran, chief executive officer and managing director, Tata Steel, uses amine-based technology. It sends back the depleted carbon dioxide gas to the gas network with increased calorific value. The plant is being established with technological support from Carbon Clean- the leading UK-based carbon capture and storage solutions provider.
The company stated that economical solutions for capturing and use of carbon dioxide at scale are essential for sustainability of domestic as well as global steel industry. The operational experience gained from the plant will provide required data and confidence to establish larger such plants in future, it added.
