Tata Steel Ijmuiden Plant Operations Come to a Near Standstill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The employees at the Tata Steel Dutch steelmaking facility went ahead with further strike actions on Monday, in protest against the company’s proposed plan to restructure the regional operations, which is feared to result in job cuts at the Ijmuiden plant.

The nightshift workers resorted to strike action Sunday. This was the third day of strike actions at the plant in the past one week. The strike brought the entire packaging steel production at the plant to a standstill. The striking employees demanded a guarantee from the company management that the planned restricting of European steel operations will not result in redundancies at the plant. The unions fear that the restricting may likely result in nearly 1,000 job cuts.

Meantime, the company has called upon the union leaders of the striking workers for talks. It requested the union colleagues in the Netherlands to call off the industrial action, especially when the company is passing through extremely tough times following the pandemic crisis. The industrial action would only help to put additional pressure on company’s results. The company looks forward to an active engagement with the striking unions in the coming days, said press release issued by Tata Steel.
