SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tata Steel Nederland has entered into an agreement with Boliden- the leading Swedish metal company towards procurement of low-carbon zinc, which is mined in Boliden’s own mines without using fossil energy. The deal will cover major portion of the steelmaker’s zinc needs. Moreover, it provides customers with more sustainable steel products.
Commenting on the development, Willem Vermeulen, Chief Procurement Officer of Tata Steel Nederland said that the agreement marks a new step in its sustainability journey and will help the company to reduce its indirect carbon dioxide emissions. Tata Steel is committed to make its steel production more sustainable, he added.
Zinc is a key raw material used in the production of galvanised steel. It offers a protective barrier, thus extending the lifespan of steel, by making it more resistant to environmental conditions. Incidentally, galvanised steel is used in wide range of industries, mainly in the manufacture of automotive body and parts.
Tata Steel Nederland aims to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 35-40% by 2030 and attain carbon-neutrality by 2045. The use of recycled zinc in steel production in addition to low emission zinc from Boliden is part of these efforts.
