SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Indian government announced its decision to formulate various task forces to drive steel industry’s progress towards a greener and more sustainable future.
According to sources, the government will form a total of 13 task forces, which will comprise of various industry stakeholders such as industry experts, academicians, think tanks as well as various bodies and ministries. These task forces will submit strategies and recommendations to the government to enhance ongoing decarbonisation efforts by the steel sector.
The Ministry of Steel, in a statement, noted that the government will focus on production and consumption of high-quality steel derived from recycled materials. The steel manufacturers will be reminded to adhere to specific quality standards. In order to ensure the quality of products, the Ministry has issued notification on 145 standards under Quality Control Orders (QCOs), aimed to guarantee that clients receive high-quality goods.
The scrap recycling policy introduced in 2019 will boost the availability of domestically generated scrap material for steel production, thereby curbing the use of coal, which in turn contributes to a less carbon-intensive steel production process. This is further supplemented with the Vehicles Scrapping Rules of 2021, which intends to ensure steady supply of scrap materials for the industry.
