SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Taseko Mines, in an announcement made last Wednesday, noted that it has resumed operations at its Gibraltar mine in south central British Columbia- the second largest copper-molybdenum operation in Canada.
The miner had suspended mining and milling operations at the site, after failing to reach a new collective agreement with unionized workers, following the expiry of the existing agreement on May 31st, 2024. More than 500 workers went on strike on Jun 1, after months of negotiations.

The mine has now resumed operations after the company and workers’ union finally arriving at a tentative agreement over the weekend. The new agreement was ratified by union members through a vote held last week. The newly agreed contract will be valid until May 31, 2027, said the company press release.
Taseko had acquired the Gibraltar mine in 1999, after which it had invested approximately $800 million in various modernization and expansion projects. Currently, it is the second largest open-pit copper mine in the country. The mine had recorded production of 122.6 million pounds of copper in 2023, thereby exceeding its previous guidance for the year. Meantime, the mine is expected to produce 115 million pounds of copper during the current year.
