Stora Enso Paper Machines at Finnish Mill Ended Production

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stora Enso announced that its paper machines in Oulu, Finland have ceased production. The last batch of woodfree coated (WFC) papers rolled out from PM No.7 during the final weeks of September this year, marking an end to almost 30 years of paper production in Oulu. It must be noted that the mill is currently being converted into kraftliner business.

While announcing the conversion project, Stora Enso had committed supply of WFC papers to its customers until the end of 2020. Accordingly, deliveries will continue as promised. A big share of the customer demand has been pre-produced at Oulu mill.

The sheeting plants- Lumipaper NV in Belgium and Lumipaper Ltd. in UK will ensure supply. The Lumipaper NV will continue to sheet Oulu Lumi grades until end-2020. After this, it will sheet and resize packaging products in addition to Stora Enso papers.

After the conversion, Stora Enso will remain as the second biggest producer of paper in Europe. The company will offer complete range of products, including those required for newspapers, books, magazines, in addition to a wide range of office papers.           

Heli Ristola, Head of WFC segment sales, Stora Enso thanked all customers who have been with the company for so many years until the end of the wood free coated era. The quality had remained on excellent level until the end of production, she added.

The kraftliner production at Oulu mill is expected to commence by the end of 2020.
