Stora Enso Announces Significant Investment in Oulu Paper Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Regional State Administrative Agency of Northern Finland has granted environmental permit for Stora Enso’s plan to convert its Oulu paper mill into as containerboard mill. Subsequently, the company announced its decision to earmark Euro 40 million towards environmental improvements at the mill facility.

The conversion of the mill is being carried out with a total investment of Euro 350 million. The amount earmarked for environmental improvements will help the company to significantly reduce the mill’s environmental impacts. It aims to bring about notable improvement in the mill’s odour and noise levels and reduction in water emissions.

Stora Enso will introduce multi-stage combustion systems for malodorous gases, which in turn will prevent the spread of odours. Also, it plans to install wood chip silos in order to reduce noise from the mill. In addition, the investment will ensure marked improvement of water impacts in the area.

Juha Mäkimattila, Oulu Mill Director noted that the environmental improvement projects would be completed before the scheduled start of production by end-2020.

The conversion of Oulu mill's paper machine 7 into a high-quality virgin kraftliner machine is expected to increase the mill’s production capacity to 530,000 tonnes of unbleached pulp per annum. Meantime, the environmental permit allows annual kraftliner production of 500,000 tonnes.
