Stora Enso Oulu Mill Announced Conversion Into Kraftliner Production

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Stora Enso Oulu mill in Finland successfully converted from paper production into high-quality kraftliner production. The official inauguration of the renewed mill was held by means of a virtual ceremony, on account of ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.

The initial plan to make investment at the mill was announced in May 2019. Ever since the announcement, the Euro 350 million conversion project has surpassed various milestones as per schedule. The commercial deliveries commenced in first quarter of the current year. In fact, the ramp-up phase is proceeding ahead of plan. Going by the current pace, the new machine is expected to reach its designated annual production capacity before the end of June 2021, said the company press release.

Annica Bresky, President and CEO, Stora Enso noted that packaging represents more than 40% of its total sales currently. The additional kraftliner capacity will further strengthen the company’s offering in the global markets, Bresky added.

In addition to the conversion of paper machine 7 into kraftliner production, the investment also implemented major modification of the pulp mill and drying machine for unbleached brown pulp. Also, the company had made significant investment in enhancing the mill’s environmental performance.
