SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The massive upgrade aimed at centralising and modernizing wood handling at Imatra Mills has completed on schedule, said Stora Enso in a press release. The company had invested EUR 80 million in the project targeted to enhance premium packaging board production capabilities. The modernization project had commenced in Q1 last year.
The project comprised of installation of a third debarking line and infrastructural changes to the existing wood yard. Henceforth, wood will be debarked and handled centrally on Kaukopaa Mill’s new debarking line. The project also delivered significant improvements to chip handling systems at the facility.
The completion of the project ensures significant reduction in water usage in the wood handling process. As per estimates, it will result in 85% reduction in water use, compared to the old debarking line. An end to wood handling at the Tainionkoski Mill will result in reduced noise level at the facility.
Mikko Nieminen, Milll Director, Imatra Mills noted that the investment will serve Imatra Mills for decades to come. The construction progressed as usual, despite challenges brought by the pandemic. The work was completed on time, within budget and safely, he added.
