Stelco Announced Ramp Up of Blast Furnace at Lake Erie Works

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hamilton, Ontario-based Stelco Holdings Inc. announced that it has restarted blast furnace at its Lake Erie Works facility in Nanticoke, Ontario integrated steel plant. The blast furnace restart took place around the first week of October. The company is currently ramping it up towards the expected capacity.

Earlier in mid-September this year, the company had announced that a comprehensive blast furnace upgrade and reline project is underway at the facility. It had planned hot metal production from the furnace during early-October this year.

The project is the first in the history of Lake Erie Works. The upgrade project has led to creation of the first smart and technologically advanced blast furnace of its kind in North America. The project has helped in boosting quality and operational efficiency and reducing production costs at the mill. Furthermore, it has enhanced the hot metal production to up to 300,000 net tons per annum.

Alan Kestenbaum, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Stelco Holdings noted that the company is extremely pleased with the employees and contractors who showed courage to undertake the project in the middle of the global pandemic to create a next-generation furnace at the steelworks.
